Christmas time, the best days during the year. Friendly atmosphere of Christmas markets, smiles on the face of the people and kind of happiness in the air. I love Christmas.
This year is going to be different. I changed this atmosphere for warm and humid climate of the Southeast Asia. Sun, 33 degrees, palms and sea. Few Indian girls sitting next to me on the ferry to Langkawi probably don’t know what the whole Christian world celebrating today. Young Malay boys are making selfies on the roof of the ferry. On the boat are also people from China and Bangladesh. Few tourists and few guys from the islands around.
We can make a small metaphor. Malasya is like this ferry. You can find here nationalities mentioned above. Malays are Muslims, Chinese believe in their local religions and gods, Indians are Hindu, people from Bangladesh and Burma are mainly Buddhist. In the last month I’ve lived with Malay and Chinese families. I haven’t seen some rasism or signs of violence between these ethnics. On the other hand I cannot say that these groups are equal to each other. This society is based mainly on the respect. People accept their roles.
I am here really short time to make some conclusions. From my observations of the daily life I can say, that Chinese are mainly ruling their own businesses. Malay are mainly in the better paid positions. Indians, Bangladeshes, Burmiens and Indonesians do manual jobs. These nationalities come to Malaysia because of the higher salary and better jobs.
