Yesterday was huge ceremony on the whole island. Everyone made a lot of noise all around the houses to banish the bad demons. In the streets were going traditionally dressed Balinese people with a plenty of statues of the gods and the demons. On the opposite side, today is silent day. Nothing works, no cars, no motorbikes, no planes. And actually no one is allowed to go out of the houses. Bali is off. Finally, image of the tropical paradise from the front pages of the magazines. Unfortunately you cannot go out… 🙂
To be honest I don’t like Bali so much. In the same time I should say, how I appreciate, that I can be here. What I don’t like? Everything here is just about money. If you are foreigner price is different for you then for locals, everywhere. On the small walk around the main beach you have to say NO for hundreds time. If you’re not interested in caps, sunglasses, metal crabs, ice creams, ice drinks, bed, surf lessons, massages, etc.
Taxi drivers. I have experience how they lie just because of the profit. They horn when you walk around, they stop near to you and just bother you.
Another group of special people are the “security” guys. During the days they manage the traffic in front of their hotels (more less they are like the policeman) and during the nights they change into the drug dealers and the mediators for prostitution. Actually mushrooms are selling nearly everyone. Once I stucked in a traffic jam. Guy on the scooter near to me offered me the best mushroom on the planet. It took nearly five minutes of persuasions about quality of the “product”. And these are the day and night reality in Kuta, Denpasar, Canggu. Basicly everywhere, where are the tourists.
To not to be a just negative. The waves are awesome in Bali. I fulfilled one of my dreams. To learn how to surf. I’ve never seen waves like this before. Nicely shaped, coming in frequent sequences. Awesome. But I found also one problem. This problem is rubbish. Some days you are paddling to the “Wave of rubbish”. The plastic bags, bottles and the covers of whatever are everywhere. Based on the natural power, beach is changing into the garbage dump. Later come cleaners and big excavators to make the beach clean. Another day could be different. Sea is clean with the warm water.
Situation with rubbish depends on the rain. Why? In all countries of the region Southeast Asie is normal, that organic rubbish go back to the nature. And the rest is burned. In Bali people use canals for the rain water as the fireplace, where they burn the rubbish. When the rain comes everything go from the centre of the island to the sea. What more, canals for the rain water are connected with the canals which irrigate the rice fields. Water is the main substance for growing the rice. And if the water is contaminate, rice is contaminate too. And who eat the rice?
Based on these experiences I’ve realized how unresponsible are companies working with the plastics. They are mainly focused on their profit. After sold of the product to the final customer they don’t care what happen with the empty plastic bottle, or with the sack, or packages. In Bali everything is packed into the plastic, because it looks good while selling to the westerns customers. And to secure, they give you plastic bag into another plastic bag. What more, I saw public bins just at two places on the whole island and it was on the beach. Something is wrong.
Ubud. Cultural centre of Bali is a calmer than Kuta, Denpasa, but the main street of this small town can remind you touristic areas anyway. A lot of galleries, yoga retreat courses, restaurants, shops and tourists. But if you went out of these busy streets, just walking distance to almost each direction, you can find the rice fields, the temples and the local artist. Everything in the centre of the rice terraces. You can find silence and draw, write, or just think about yourself. Amazing. I have one video from one calm and somehow mysterious place.
In Ubud I spent one week with my friend from Spain and second week in the brand new villa in the small village southern from Ubud. The villa was surrounded by coconut palms and rice fields. Awesome place. And about how I could stay one week in luxurious villa for free I will write in the next posts.
In the northern part of the island are located three volcanoes. One of them is Gunug (mount) Batur. There I was with my friends Camille from France and Marcel from Germany. We spent amazing night on the peak of the active volcano. With the fire, the beer, the music and a lot of laught. In the morning we saw wonderful sun rise and because of the night on the peak we had best places to watch. For sunrise there are a lot of people. It’s because of the selling of this trip in the touristic areas… I have one video from the way there where we found really nice place. And another video from the peak of the volcano. Both of them prepared to post.
And the last place I really like is southern part of the island. Under the Nguruh Rai international airport. There are places like Uluwatu, Jimbaran and Blue point. You can find some hidden empty beaches, high coast line made by rocks or amazing coral reefs for surfers. Sometimes also tourists, but not as much as in Kuta. What you definitely will find is green everywhere… From there I have also one video prepared to post.
To sum up, Bali is for me like a lover. Something I love and something I hate.
Bali
